GONZALES - Reburial of damaged or dislodged caskets and vaults will begin soon, Ascension Parish announced Tuesday.

Family members of remains already identified are in the process of being notified. Other families, though, are asked to report the conditions of family grave sites. There are a number of caskets and vaults that are unidentified following the flood in August.

"Parish officials have begun notifying families or next-of-kin for those caskets that have been positively identified, and this process make take several days," a spokesperson said in a statement.

Eight cemeteries, though, could have issues:

Community Cemetery – Sorrento, LA

Galvez Baptist Church Cemetery – 42467 LA-42, Prairieville, LA

Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery – 10587 Beco Road, St. Amant, LA

New River Methodist Cemetery – 46040 LA-22, St. Amant, LA

Shiloh Church Cemetery – 44171 LA-42, Prairieville, LA

St. Amant Baptist Cemetery – 10116 Romans Road, St. Amant, LA

United Faithful Methodist Church Cemetery – 14253 Highway 431, St. Amant, LA

United Fellowship Church Cemetery – 41527 Cemetery Road, Gonzales, LA

Government officials asked for family members to report any disturbed grave site, including if caskets or vaults are found out of place or if the lid is unsealed or displaced. Report issues to Meredith Conger in the Ascension Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness at 225-621-8360.

Next, families should register with FEMA. The federal government could pay or help pay for reburial costs. Only one family member should register, Ascension Parish suggested, and even clarified further that "it will be better if that family member has not already applied for individual assistance for residential home damage or rental assistance since maximum assistance amounts may apply."

A meeting will be held, Wednesday October 5th at 5:30 pm at the Ascension Parish Governmental Complex located at 1024 E Ascension Complex Blvd, Gonzales, LA 70737 for family members of those in disturbed graves to register with FEMA representatives and sign the appropriate paperwork.
