EBRSO warns residents of scam text messages asking for debit card info.
BATON ROUGE – The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a phone scam asking bank users for their debit card number.
An area bank has reported that several of its customers have reported receiving text messages from the phone number (844)-584-3379 stating that their debit card has been locked. The text message instructs the cardholder to call (844)-237-6009 in order to unlock their debit card.
When the cardholder calls the phone number, an automated answering service instructs the cardholder to enter their 16 digit card number, their PIN number and the card's expiration date. Once those number have been entered, the automated service responds by telling the cardholder that their card is unlocked.
EBRSO encourages anyone who receives text messages as described above not to respond to the message.
