FEMA now placing flood survivors in rental units

BATON ROUGE - Thousands of people are still trying to figure out where they'll live since their homes were destroyed during the flood. While some are living in their home and rebuilding, others are staying in manufactured housing units. Some, are still waiting.

FEMA says it's working to find permanent housing solutions for some 7,000 people. Yesterday, FEMA extended the deadline for people to stay in hotels until mid-December. Tuesday, FEMA announced another option of rental units for flood survivors, working toward a permanent or long-term living situation.

Applicants may qualify for continued assistance and are encouraged to keeping in contact with their housing coordinator about options.

One apartment complex under construction on North Street in Baton Rouge is nearing completion and will soon open to flood survivors.

"There's obviously an acute need for housing," said Collis Temple, who is rehabbing the building.

Crews are installing cabinets, flooring and other fixtures that are brand new. They're racing to the finish and hope to open in time for the near year. Temple says he negotiated an agreement with FEMA to house people in need.

"For about 15-18 months, depending on the individual needs of people who live here," said Temple.

FEMA says the goal is to provide a place for people to stay while they make repairs to their home or rental property. A fresh start or temporary home for people to rebuild their lives, whether their renters or home owners. FEMA says i

Survivors can apply to stay in a rental unit available by calling the FEMA helpline and checking the rental database here.

FEMA says survivors should keep in contact with their insurance companies, their case managers if assigned and with FEMA as each may open a door to another recovery opportunity.
