Interfaith partners, advocates gather for reflection on toughening immigration legislation
BATON ROUGE - Wednesday morning, advocates and interfaith leaders are gathering for "collective resolve" against toughening anti-immigration legislation in Louisiana.
Six bills are on Governor Jeff Landry's desk, aimed at expanding Louisiana's role in immigration enforcement. Supporters say they align with the Trump Administration's push to crack down on undocumented immigrants.
Wednesday at the Catholic Life Center in Baton Rouge, advocates with the Louisiana Organization for Refugees And Immigrants (LORI) and faith leaders are calling it dangerous anti-immigration legislation.
"We left our country not as a result of choice but as a result of circumstance. No one chooses to leave home except home in the mode of a shack," LORI Communications Director Sharon Njie said. "How can you say you love God if you do not love your neighbor?"
Representatives with LORI say these bills make it easier for the government to target immigrants without understanding their full story.
"When we were making mechanisms to automatically identify individuals based on their country of origin were placing a harmful precedence that racial profiling is okay, and ethnic cleansing is okay and it's not," Policy and Advocacy Associate Tia Fields said.
The event featured immigrants sharing personal stories.

“I'm a migrant, my country is in political turmoil. I lost my family, if I look back home all I see is graves. I came into this country with no family, but the family I have is standing next to me," Njie said.
She says the bills send a message that immigrants aren't welcome, despite many of them already calling Louisiana home.
"We just want a seat at your table, we don't want too much, we want to support you, we want to ensure that you thrive and that's what we bring to this community because we value other people," Njie said.
Advocates say they'll continue to speak out, hoping their stories and voices help shape the conversation moving forward.
