Local organization remembers anniversary of Battle of Baton Rouge during American Revolution
BATON ROUGE - The Sons of the American Revolution, along with the Daughters of the American Revolution and more local organizations, is commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of Baton Rouge.
The commemoration is happening on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 8 a.m. at the Galvez Plaza in downtown Baton Rouge. The event marks the 246th anniversary of the battle, which was fought between Sept. 12 and 21, 1779.
In the battle outside the 13 seaboard colonies, Spanish Colonial Governor of Louisiana Bernardo de Galvez led forces to capture the British fort in Baton Rouge before continuing upriver to capture Natchez. Galvez then carried the campaign east along the Gulf coast, all in furtherance of the American fight for independence.
