BATON ROUGE - Some mobile homes, commonly referred to as "trailers," could qualify for the state's $15,000 flood damage renovation grant.

The grant, known as the Shelter at Home program in Louisiana, will pay for basic repairs to a home so owners can return to safe living conditions following the flood. The state pays contractors to make homes safe and livable and it is up to the homeowner to continue additional repairs. According to the program website, very basic initial work will removing flood damaged materials, repairing basic electrical wiring, installing a basic water heater and providing up to $500 in basic cooking or refrigerating appliances. Work is done at no out-of-pocket cost to the eligible homeowner.

Recently, owners of mobile homes have complained they did not qualify for the program. The state announced Monday, though, that FEMA agreed to allow certain mobile home properties - with or without wheels - to be repaired through the program.

The state asked the federal government to allow mobile homes to be covered and FEMA agreed but only if the mobile home could be repaired safely and with the allotted $15,000. Assistance for owners of mobile homes would be determined on a case-by-case basis, officials said.

The adjustment does not apply to people living in recreational vehicles - RVs or travel trailers. 

Twenty-eight people had applied for help through the Shelter at Home program but were denied because they lived in trailers. Those 28 people are being contacted, and their applications will be reviewed for possible monetary assistance, WBRZ learned Monday afternoon.
