The Capital Region stays dry this weekend, with sunshine, low humidity, and warm afternoons dominating the forecast. That quiet stretch lasts into the middle of next week before moisture begins building back into the region and rain chances increase.  

Today and Tonight:  Saturday will be mostly sunny. Temperatures will climb into the low 90s, but the combination of dry air and a relatively cool start will keep the heat from becoming excessive. Another comfortable night follows, with temperatures dropping into the upper 60s inland and lower 70s closer to the coast. Sunday brings more of the same — sunshine, dry weather and another afternoon in the low 90s.

College Football: LSU hosts Texas A&M in Baton Rouge with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff. It will be hot during the afternoon for tailgating, with temperatures reaching the low 90s, but the evening will become increasingly comfortable. Temperatures should be in the 80s for most of the game, with no meaningful rain threat.

Southern heads to Jackson, Mississippi, to take on Jackson State at 6 p.m. The forecast there is nearly identical: a hot afternoon followed by temperatures settling into the 80s during the game, with dry conditions expected.

Up Next: The comfortable mornings and warm afternoons continue into the middle of next week. Temperatures will generally reach the low 90s, but the lower humidity will make a noticeable difference compared with a typical late-September heat spell.

The bigger change arrives late next week. Moisture will begin streaming northward from the Gulf, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms back to the area Thursday. Gulf moisture, along with a tropical influence from the Pacific, will increase chances for rain later this weekend. There is still plenty of uncertainty with the exact timing and placement of any heavy rain, but Friday into next weekend is increasingly looking like the period to watch for concerns.

Tropics: Tropical Depression Fay is now well out over the Atlantic and is no threat to Louisiana or the Gulf Coast. Tropical Storm Gonzalo is near the Cabo Verde Islands and is expected to weaken, while the National Hurricane Center does not anticipate any new tropical cyclone development over the next seven days.
