BATON ROUGE — Students at Southern University said they are still dealing with flickering lights and air-conditioning problems in academic buildings after recent campus power outages.

Students described walking to class, dining halls and dorm rooms in the heat with little relief once inside.

"TT Allain is super hot. The union lights went out like four times inside of the union. How are we going to function with no air?" student Ja'Niya Bouin said.

A power outage on Sept. 1 cancelled classes. Five days later, a second outage impacted campus operations and cancelled in-person classes for a week.

Although crews restored power, the university continued to experience air conditioning issues in several academic buildings and some dorm rooms.

"My teacher couldn't even teach. He was sweating as he wrote on the board," student Makayla Morris said.

Morris also raised concerns about the timing of the disruptions.

"Midterms are coming up. How are we going to get the material that we need?" Morris asked.

The university released a statement on Sept. 17 acknowledging the concerns and saying crews are actively working to fix the issues.

The university said no residence halls currently lack air conditioning, though some individual campus apartments may be experiencing issues. Residential Housing crews are responding and making repairs as concerns are reported.

The university said the campus remains in a post-power-outage recovery period, with crews identifying and addressing buildings experiencing HVAC air distribution issues, including uneven cooling in some facilities.
