Tangipahoa Sheriff's Office warns relatives of inmates about scammers calling them asking for money
HAMMOND — The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office has warned relatives of inmates about scammers pretending to be members of law enforcement.
Deputies say that, over the weekend, scam calls claimed to be from the Tangipahoa Parish Jail and asked for Cash App, Venmo or Zelle payments to release an inmate for drug treatment assistance.
The sheriff's office asks that those who receive these calls, which provide legitimate information about an inmate's booking details, do not respond.
"As a side note, we DO partner with parish government to provide a bond treatment program, but that opportunity is discussed directly with inmates, in person, at the jail," deputies added.
