BATON ROUGE - A win followed by a bye week may just be what the Southern Jaguars needed to tackle the rest of the season.
The Jags got their first SWAC win over Prairie View A&M and then took the next week off for an open date. With a 1-2 conference record heading into their eighth game, all of Southern's goals for the season are still in front of them.
Nearly every team in the SWAC West has two conference losses. This week's opponent in Texas Southern is 0-3 in conference play.
Head coach Marshall Faulk took the bye week to do some "self scouting" and evaluate where his team is at this point in the season. He saw that things are starting to come together on the field.
"When you put a bunch of guys together, you got to wait for the team to assemble. And regardless of all the work that we did in the spring and in the summer, once you get the real games, it's a little different. We're starting to gel, and we're starting to play together. I hope that we can continue to do that. Like I wish I could take the PV game and be like, okay, we're here now. I can't. I don't know that, and that's why we play the games. We play the games to find that out. I'm like, I'm looking forward to playing this game on Saturday. You know, I want to see the guys continue to play together and win together the way that the way that they showed in the PV game because the the light switch went off," Faulk said.
Southern (3-4, 1-2) will travel to face Texas Southern (1-5,0-3) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Reliant Stadium.
