DUTCHTOWN - In Dutchtown football's district opener against Walker, disaster struck the Griffins. Starting quarterback Owne Fletcher suffered a broken leg, knocking him out for the remainder of the season.

That left Dutchtown head coach Guy Mistretta with a massive problem. Who does he start at quarterback with his QB1 out?

As luck would have it, there wasn't any one player who could fill in for Fletcher. There were two: Brock Black and Ethan Odom.

"They had been splitting time all last year in JV," said Mistretta. "All the way through this year, they were fighting for the backup spot, getting equal reps, and they both know the offense."

When the Griffins first tried this new system against Prairieville, they ran a more simplified offense for the two signal callers. After the Griffins beat the Hurricanes 9-6, they steadily started opening things up more and more.

"It's just confidence really," said Black. "I have confidence that Ethan's going to go out there and do something good on the field, and then I go right back, and I have confidence that I'm going to do something good as well."

Working into this system has been pretty seamless for Odom and Black, and that's because they have experience doing this sort of thing. The two of them play the same position in baseball as well. They're both centerfielders.

"Yeah, we've been doing this a while," said Odom. "With baseball, we both play the same position, and we honestly have pretty similar playstyles."

The same can be said of their play on the football field as well.

"Me and him, we've always played the same positions throughout our whole lives," said Black. "It goes all the way back to our first year we played on the same pee-wee football team, and we both played the same position then."

Since going to this 2-QB system, Dutchtown is 4-0 with 3 district wins. The Griffins' next game is against St. Amant on Friday, Oct. 30.
