ZACHARY - A plaque at Zachary's Port Hudson National Cemetery reads, "The muffled drum's sad roll has beat."

The cemetery was the site of a 48-day-long Civil War battle fought in 1863, where 3,500 Union soldiers and 7,500 Confederates clashed.

It is now home to a 19.9-acre cemetery that is still used for veterans and their families. Port Hudson is one of 156 cemeteries in 42 states and Puerto Rico for veterans.

"It's a place for veterans to be buried and taken care of," cemetery official Ryan Hannon said. "It's also a place where the veterans are taking care of their own."

Over 15,000 veterans and their families have been laid to rest at the Port Hudson National Cemetery.
