ANGOLA — A Louisiana State Penitentiary inmate has been arrested in the killing of fellow inmate Patrick Jones.

According to West Feliciana Parish Sheriff Brian Spillman, 22-year-old Raymond Coats was arrested on manslaughter charges on July 27 in connection with Jones' death. The WBRZ Investigative Unit previously reported that Jones was killed in early June. 

In October 2023, Coats was arrested for the killing of 41-year-old mail carrier Calvin Brown. In 2025, Coats was found guilty of Brown's murder and sentenced to life in prison. 

"Due to the complexity of the case, it is expected to be presented to a grand jury to determine further proceedings," the Department of Corrections said in a statement on Monday.

Jones is one of at least a dozen inmate deaths at Angola that WBRZ has reported on.
