BATON ROUGE — A 22-year-old was killed and four others were injured, including a 14-year-old, in a shooting at an apartment complex on N. Ardenwood Drive.

The shooting happened the same day a violence prevention event took place at Gus Young Park. One of the organizations involved in that event, Kingdom Empowerment Place, told WBRZ they are planning to help those affected by the shooting.

"Yeah, so we need to go over there by Ardenwood and check out the families and see what we can do," KEP members Lawrence Morgan and Travis Paul said. "Give food to the family because they may be grieving and not eating much."

KEP has a building about five minutes from the Renaissance Gateway Apartments where the shooting happened. The organization focuses on helping the community through violence prevention and education.

"Fourteen-year-old getting shot. 22-year-old... My son is 25 years old. That would hurt my heart to hear my son is gone at the age of 25 or even at the age of 21. I got a son that's 16. I'd hate to hear about him getting shot. That's a hurting feeling," Morgan said.

At Kingdom Empowerment Place, Morgan and Paul offer anti-violence support for youth and adults through things like a music studio, a computer lab focused on AI and a space for entrepreneurship training to help people learn about jobs and social skills.

"Instead of them getting mad and fighting each other, let's have a rap battle. Get it off your chest in the battle," Morgan said.

The organization also works to reach people directly in the community.

"It's gonna be about us going over there to them. If we can just engage these people that's in the streets to make them understand we're here. If we can equip them with the tools that are necessary to be successful, then we have just empowered the people," Morgan said.

Paul said reaching parents is one of the harder parts of the work.

"Educating parents is the hardest thing we've been trying to do in this community for years. We don't have a wide gap in parenting. It's a lack of maturity in a lot of things that is missing in the community, especially when it comes to the gap of the children. In order for us to help the parents, we have to educate; we have to find resources. We have to create resources to get the parents educated," Paul said.

To Morgan and Paul, helping stop violence and supporting the city's youth is something they feel they have to do.
