BATON ROUGE — BREC held its second community meeting to gather feedback on the planned closure and sale of several neighborhood parks in north Baton Rouge.

The meeting took place at the Charles R. Kelly Community Center. The BREC Commission voted last week to move forward with selling Fortune Addition, Wenonah Street, Dover Street, Lanier Drive and Sharon Hills parks.

Several people suggested saving the locations or considering other options to keep them open for public use. Some raised concerns about how the closures may affect children.

"BREC has to ask the questions," Councilman Darryl Hurst said. "If we merge this park or these parks, how does that impact the community? You'll get a plethora of responses, but at the end of the day it's about having children cross four lane highways, or going down streets that don't have sidewalks and only have ditches, which means they have to walk in the street to get to the community based resource."

BREC's next commission meeting is scheduled for April 23.
