BATON ROUGE — The FBI is currently leading the investigation into a mysterious package that was found at the Secretary of State's Office on Tuesday.

According to officials, law enforcement conducted tests on a package containing an envelope filled with an unknown white powdery substance and found no evidence of harmful substances. The discovery of the envelope caused the elections division of the Louisiana Secretary of State's building off Essen Lane to be evacuated on Tuesday.

According to a spokesperson for the Secretary of State's office, the package was received around 12:20 p.m. The building was evacuated and the facility's air conditioning system was turned off to prevent any potential airborne spread.

Louisiana State Police Emergency Service hazmat units responded to the scene to secure the package, with the substance later being turned over to the FBI, which is leading the investigation with assistance from Louisiana State Police.

Authorities have not released details regarding the origin of the package or what the powder might be.
