BATON ROUGE — The Baton Rouge Police Department is searching for a man who allegedly stole a package containing over $25,000 worth of jewelry from a store.

An arrest warrant filed Tuesday said Jacoby White, 29, is wanted for theft over $25,000. He allegedly picked up the package from KG Jewelers on Florida Boulevard.

The warrant said that on Sept. 29, White came into the store to pick up a package containing several lab-grown diamonds that were each estimated to be worth between $5,000 and $10,000, as well as a gold bracelet worth $3,000, among other items.

The complainant said that White was "a new FedEx driver"; the arrest document said White had only been driving a FedEx truck for three days. The complainant said that when he asked if the usual driver was given a break, White said "yes" before being handed the package and appearing to scan the package.

An hour later, another driver showed up and said she was there to pick up the package. A manager told the complainant that no package was scanned and that they could not track the package. The complainant later received video from FedEx showing that White covered his dash camera with an air freshener during the route.

A regional manager told later police that White had been taken off the route to KG Jewelers due to running behind, but still picked up the package. Police were also told that White drove a different route to park after returning to the distribution center than what he is supposed to.

The manager told police that drivers usually go to a specific location after their route, where two separate people scan the packages to verify the packages were delivered by the driver. This process was never completed for White.

When a manager asked White about what happened, White said he covered the camera because he "likes his privacy and does not want anyone watching him." White also told the manager he did not know KG Jewelers was taken off his route; he also said he did not scan the package as he did not know how to add the package to his handheld scanner.

White also told the manager that he drove the truck to his designated location after returning to the facility and gave the package to an employee that collects the package. Police said video surveillance "proved that the defendant lied about dropping off packages at his designated location."
