GONZALES — The Gonzales office of Gauthier Amedee Injury Lawyers was struck by lightning Monday evening, causing an attic fire that firefighters quickly put out.

Gonzales Fire officials learned about the strike around 6 p.m. and quickly responded to the South Burnside Avenue office. Firefighters found a hole in the roof of the three-story building with smoke emitting from the opening

Within 20 minutes, the fire was contained.

The damage was limited to the attic, with minor smoke and water damage throughout the entire building. Despite the relatively minor damage, Gonzales Fire Chief Preston Landry said Tuesday that the law firm would not be in the building "for a while" as repairs are made.

Landry added that two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation following the fire.

"We are grateful for the quick actions of our firefighters and the support of our mutual aid partners," Chief Landry said. "Since this can happen at any moment to any home or business, we remind residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their homes and a practiced escape plan for their families."

The repairs are expected to take six to 12 months because the building needs a new roof.
