NAPOLEONVILLE — Assumption Parish Sheriff’s deputies are still looking to identify three fans and the student football players involved in an altercation that broke out at Friday’s game between Assumption High and Carroll High.

Lonny Cavalier, Assumption Parish Sheriff Office PIO, said three players—one from Assumption and two from Carroll—were ejected in the second quarter of the game for unsportsmanlike conduct. Near the end of the game, Assumption was up and the players were getting rough, so the referees called the game early and deputies were called to the field for precautions.

Instead of going to the visitor’s locker room, about two dozen Carroll players rushed towards game spectators and started fighting Assumption fans, Cavalier says.

One fan and one player were tased by police and cited for disturbing the peace, according to Cavalier, who says deputies are reviewing security footage to identify all participants and are coordinating with the district attorney’s office to ticket those accountable.

Cavalier also noted that reports that there was a fight between coaches is incorrect and advises such an event would have led to team penalties from the Louisiana High School Athletic Association .

In a prepared statement, LHSAA said it was committed to promoting sportsmanship on and off the field before, during and after every sports contest and that it would not tolerate unsportsmanlike conduct by student-athletes, coaches, administrators or fans.

LHSAA officials have been in communication with Assumption High School and Carroll High School leaders regarding Friday’s incident.

“Both schools have 48 hours, beginning Monday morning, to submit a written report to the LHSAA as we begin our investigation,” the organization said on Monday. “Once all requested information has been received, the LHSAA will conduct a thorough review of the incident and determine any appropriate action involving the member schools in accordance with LHSAA rules and procedures.”

In a statement on Facebook, Assumption High school leaders thanked the local sheriff’s office for its quick response as well as the parents and fans who attended and were patient while authorities took control of the scene.

“To ALL of our students wearing our uniforms and those who were there in support: your sportsmanship during and after the game was awesome. Not getting involved in something that you know we do not promote or support makes us so proud of you and says so much about the students of ASSUMPTION HIGH. THANK YOU FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING and CHOOSING TO STAY ON THE RIGHT SIDE,” the school wrote online.

“Finally, to those from our community who chose to instigate, initiate, and participate in unsportsmanlike behavior and fighting and violence, you ARE NOT AHS. We do not appreciate your actions and behaviors and do not condone nor support them regardless of how others choose to present themselves. That is not the kind of fans we want or need in our stadium.”
