BATON ROUGE — Thousands of fans filled the arena for the Baton Rouge Kingfish’s first home game, bringing new energy to downtown and raising hopes for an economic boost for nearby businesses.

The hockey team’s return has generated excitement among fans and local officials, who say the economic impact could extend beyond the ice and into downtown restaurants, hotels and neighboring businesses.

“It’s an exciting moment, and we noticed it in the town and the people I’m talking to,” said Jacob Hector, a member of the Baton Rouge Kingfish ownership group. “I think people are just really fired up to have the Kingfish back in town.”

While filling seats is a priority for the organization, municipal leaders hope attendees will spend time and money in downtown Baton Rouge before and after games.

“Our hope is always that people will come well before an event starts and grab dinner, stay in a hotel around town, and make an experience out of it,” said Alysia Guin, director of marketing and partnerships for the Raising Cane’s River Center.

The River Center works with local hotels and restaurants to encourage visitors to make a night out of attending events.

Whitney Hoffman Sayal, executive director of the Downtown Development District, said the increased exposure could also encourage residents who do not typically visit downtown to explore its businesses and attractions.

The team's economic potential follows the Baton Rouge Zydeco’s inaugural season, which generated an estimated $8.1 million for the local economy.

Downtown Development District officials say the Kingfish could generate an even greater financial footprint if the initial crowd enthusiasm translates into sustained downtown activity throughout the season.

The Kingfish now head on the road to face the Mid-South Monarchs in Southaven, Mississippi, to continue their season.
