LIVINGSTON — A Livingston Parish Council meeting descended into accusations of lying and infighting before members voted 6-2 to request a state review of a leaked check that exposed the parish’s banking information.

The approved proposal, brought forward by Council Member Erin Sandefur, asks the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office and the Louisiana Board of Ethics to look into the release of unredacted parish checks as well as payments to the Moody Law Firm, which handled litigation over the controversial Deer Run development.

The dispute stems from a campaign mailer issued by district attorney candidate Sherman Mack. The ad featured images of unredacted parish checks along the border and critiqued his opponent, Brad Cascio, a Moody Law Firm attorney. The inclusion of the parish’s bank account and routing numbers compromised account security, forcing local officials to close the account.

Sandefur subsequently acknowledged providing the check images to Mack, citing her concerns over Moody Law Firm payments.

The AG and board of ethics referrals will add to an existing criminal investigation launched by 21st Judicial District Attorney Scott Perrilloux.

Council members clashed during the meeting over Sandefur's actions.

“To take that information and then use it to help another campaign that you're not even involved with that, that's a mistrust in my book,” council member John Mangus said.

“Mr. Mangus, you don't know what happened. And have you ever heard the old saying, what happens when you assume? And so it is probably not a good idea to assume,” Sandefur replied.
