Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired's 'White Cane Day' shows how students navigate daily life
BATON ROUGE — A special event at the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired on Friday showed how blind and visually impaired students navigate daily life.
Students led about 15 stations at "Rocking Independence" where guests learned about Braille, white cane travel and assistive technology. Organizers say the event highlighted independence and access for the blind and visually impaired community.
"So today's goal was to spread awareness, form a better relationship with our community, meet and greet new possible community partners and just let our students really be able to be the advocates for themselves and teach the community about what amazing things they do each and every day and the things that they accomplish," Alisha Butler, teacher of the year at the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired, said.
There was also a panel held for students.
