BATON ROUGE — A U.S. Navy veteran's home received a new roof on Thursday.

Contractors from Garcia Roofing, alongside Rebuilding Together Baton Rouge and the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, replaced Hughes Lundy's roof at his General Lee Avenue home.

"This roof was 20 years old. It was very much nearing the end of its life," Ricardo Garcia, workforce manager at Garcia Roofing, said. "It was well installed, but it was getting to that point where it needed to be replaced."

Garcia said that replacing roofs in Louisiana is a more regular practice because of weather conditions like hurricanes and humidity.

"The longer you wait to replace it, the worse your problems are going to be," he said.

The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project is a nationwide project that aims to honor veterans and their families through acts of service. The program, which began in 2016, has helped more than 775 military members receive new roofs.

Lundy applied for the project and was selected for the roof giveaway, Garcia added.
