A gray and showery day is ahead as widespread rain and  a few thunderstorms continue, with some areas seeing heavy rain before the pattern finally begins to improve tonight. The good news is a much drier stretch is taking shape for the first half of next week, although another wet weekend could be developing by Friday.

Today and Tonight:  Rain will be widespread, with embedded thunderstorms mixed in. The atmosphere remains exceptionally moist, and that will allow some storms to produce very heavy rain in a short time.

The persistent clouds and rain will keep temperatures unusually cool, with highs struggling to get out of the mid-80s. Rain and thunderstorms gradually become less widespread tonight as the front continues pushing south.

Up Next: Monday starts the transition toward much quieter weather. Rain chances drop considerably as moisture decreases, although a few showers could linger near the coast. Tuesday and Wednesday look much drier, with more sunshine returning to the Capital Region and temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 80s.

Thursday could be the warmest day of the week, with some locations potentially reaching around 90 degrees. Unfortunately, the dry stretch may be short-lived. Moisture from the southwest Gulf is expected to return late Friday, setting up another round of increasing rain chances Friday and Saturday. Forecast details are still evolving, but a wet weekend is possible.

Tropics: The National Hurricane Center is watching an area of low pressure that could develop over the southwestern Gulf later this week. Development is unlikely over the next couple of days, but there is a low chance of tropical formation over the next seven days as the system drifts northward.
