ALBANY — Livingston Parish Sheriff deputies arrested a man in Albany on Tuesday morning after receiving complains of several pigs running at large and damaging property on N. Cafe Line Road.

Deputies located 40 pigs living in substandard conditions, without access to food or water, as well as one dead pig and several other that were severely injured, according to Sheriff Jason Ard. Many of the pigs were escaping under a fence to block the nearby roadway and were free to roam, he says.

"The pigs have been removed from the property and are safe," Ard said in a prepared statement on Friday.

Malik Smith, 27, was arrested and faces seven counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and 33 counts of simple cruelty to animals. Smith is currently held in the Livingston Parish Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing, according to officials.
