LIVINGSTON - First responders across Livingston Parish are painting their patrol cars pink to raise awareness and money for breast cancer patients and survivors.

The bright pink cars, complete with pink badges, led the way at this year's Annual Fair Parade in Livingston as part of a breast cancer awareness campaign called "A Thin Pink Line."

The campaign started in 2022 and has grown from just one department to nearly a dozen over the years.

Denham Springs City Marshal Joe Shumate lost his mother to cancer in the 1990s, so the campaign carries personal meaning for him.

"Cancer affects everyone at some point in your life," Shumate said. "Someone you know, someone you're kin to, somebody you're a friend of. It's very important that we work collaboratively to try to find a cure for this."

The wrapped cars feature QR codes for donations to the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Survivorship Center.

The campaign runs through Oct. 31 and is funded through sponsorships and private donations, using zero tax dollars.

This campaign includes the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, Albany Police Department, Denham Springs City Marshal, Town of Springfield Police Department, Walker Police Department, Killian Police Department, City of Denham Springs Fire Department, and Varnado & Sons Towing.
