BATON ROUGE — Southern University kicked off its first week of classes with a celebration called "Pretty Wednesday" at the Union Courtyard.

The event featured live music and snow balls and Mayor Sid Edwards was also in attendance.

"Pretty Wednesday" is part of the university's Welcome Week, which carries the theme "Suite Life on the Bluff." University officials say events like this give new and returning students the chance to feel comfortable on campus.

Welcome Week wraps up with an event at the university amphitheater Friday at noon.
