OPELOUSAS — A 25-year-old man and 36-year-old woman in Opelousas were arrested on Thursday after law enforcement found two children locked in a room with living conditions so severe it nauseated veteran detectives.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff's narcotics detectives visited Nickolas Brett Bolejack's residence on Thursday after receiving a tip about narcotics in the presence of juveniles.

Upon approaching the house, detectives noted that one of the room windows appeared to be covered in a brown substance—later identified as fecal matter. Detectives also observed two children under the age of 5 completely naked in this same room, exposed to public view. Authorities discovered the door to the bedroom was zip-tied and wired shut, preventing the children from exiting the room.

The mother of the children—36-year-old Kimberly Bolejack—was at the home and did not wish to speak to officers.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office Juvenile Division was immediately notified and responded to the incident, and the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services were also notified, according to Sheriff Bobby Guidroz. Five children in the home were placed in the custody of DCFS and two other children at area schools were transferred to DCFS custody as well. All seven children are under the age of 12.

A search warrant resulted in the seizure of narcotic residue and paraphernalia.

Nickolas Brett Bolejack and Kimberly Bolejack were each arrested and on two counts of false imprisonment, seven counts of illegal use of controlled dangerous substances in the presence of minors, one count of cruelty to animals, two counts of second degree cruelty to juveniles, five counts of cruelty to juveniles with minor injuries, one count of drug paraphernalia, and seven counts of criminal neglect of a family.

“The living conditions in the home were horrid enough to nauseate veteran narcotics detectives, who see some of the worse things in society," Guidroz said. "The DCFS personnel wore hazmat suits to protect themselves from the filth, insects and the smell. This case demonstrates the results of illegal narcotics use and its effects on innocent children. Cases such as this strengthen our resolve to pursue narcotics violations throughout St. Landry Parish.

“I will spare the public from the disgusting interior view of the filth and conditions these children had to live in."

Anyone with additional information about the crime is encouraged to call the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office at 337-948-6516, or to call Crime Stoppers at 337-948-TIPS, download the P3 app on your mobile device or simply dial **TIPS on your mobile phone to tip. All calls are anonymous and a cash reward can be earned for information leading to an arrest.
